It’s time for round V of ETHEL’s HomeBaked commissioning initiative and we’re thrilled to announce a call for scores! Previous rounds have commissioned and premiered 20 new works for ETHEL from early-career composers. This time around, we are collaborating with our friend, flutist, composer and producer Allison Loggins-Hull, and looking for works for string quartet and flute. We are opening this opportunity to anyone who considers themselves a music creator and welcoming a wide-range of practices. These practices may include music that’s notational, non-notational, and/or improvisatory, that incorporates electronics, found objects, and possibly anything else you can think of!
We are especially excited and open to working with creators who may not yet have had the experience of writing for this instrumentation. We are seeking to broaden our musical scope by working with those who have differing experiences and practices, and whose voices have been historically underrepresented.
For the application, we ask that you submit two, 3-minute excerpts of contrasting work that demonstrate your compositional style, along with accompanying excerpts of scores (in whatever form they may take). We also ask for a bio, an artist statement, and a brief proposal of what you hope to create for the group.
Selected composers will have the opportunity to mentor with members of ETHEL and Allison Loggins-Hull, as well as established composers and previous HomeBaked commissionees. The commissions, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, will be in the amount of $4,000 for works of 10-12 minutes. The final works will be considered for inclusion in our HomeBaked touring program, which will also feature a new piece by Loggins-Hull, and be performed for multiple seasons.
Applications are now open! The deadline to submit materials is July 1, 2021 at 11:59pm EST. Selected applicants will be announced in August.
